Popularity Contest

I noticed in my Twitter feed the news that the Martelly/Lamothe government in Haiti is boasting that it has  the "highest approval ratings in the Western Hemisphere" according to a new poll conducted by the Miami-based Newlink firm.

Just so everyone is clear, though, Newlink is also on the Haitian government's payroll, as can be seen from their list of clients here.

Newlink, as it also happens, has a longstanding business relationship with some of the more rancid nationalistic currents now at work in the whole citizenship debate in the Dominican Republic, including the governing Partido de la Liberacion Dominicana (PLD), something I wrote about as far back as 2007 here.

Especially worth noting is Newlink's relationship with the Dominican Republic sugar and media barons the Grupo Vicini.

Things certainly are getting interesting on the island. I may have to come back...

Happy holidays from Florida's balmy shores,

MD
